A rant on challenges to feed our children safely

I was writing a handout on plastics for the patients up here and discovered that recycling code 7 means the container is made of polycarbonate, which is a source of the dreaded bisphenol A (BpA).  So then I went to look in my cupboard and discovered the little cups of organic applesauce I had bought for our daughter’s lunches is in small cups with a 7 on the bottom.   Aargh!  I had already been whining about the fact that the all-fruit/no-sugar spreads are not available with organic fruit, and most of the breads made without sugar cane are made with high fructose corn syrup, the organic macaroni does not include a whole wheat option, etc.   When are the organic producers going to line up with products for health-conscious consumers – do they not realize that if we are willing to pay for organic food we most likely do not want to give our kids a bunch of sugar or feed them contaminants from the plastic containers the food is packaged in?
