Climbing to new heights

I have been gradually improving my strength and stamina since the radiation therapy this spring – could barely walk around the block in May.  I have been hiking this summer with the Mazamas and stumbled into some of the steeper hikes by accident one weekend when I could not find the easier group I had been planning to go hiking with.   I hiked Mount Defiance that day (12 miles, 4900 feet), then Larch Mountain a week later (amazing waterfalls, though a cold and rainy day, about 14 miles, 4000 feet), and last Sunday I hiked Green Point Mountain in the Columbia River Gorge – 15 miles, 5200 feet of elevation gain, beautiful mist in the trees and fall colors in the maples and huckleberries. . . . I am definitely living in gratitude for the resilience of my human body, and for the beauty of this planet.

The only fly in the ointment is Blind Dating Hell – I am frequently reminded of the Christine Lavin song:  “How many times will I have to tell some stranger my life story, which gets longer and longer and longer the longer I live on this earth?”  And there is no squelcher to rival the “I am surviving cancer” line. . .
